White light thermoplasmonic activated gold nanorod arrays enable the photo-termal disinfection of medical tools from bacterial contamination

Federica Zaccagnini, Piotr Radomski, Maria Laura Sforza, Pawel Ziółkowski, Seok-In Lim, Kwang-Un Jeong, Dariusz Mikielewicz, Nicholas P. Godman, Dean R. Evans, Jonathan E. Slagle, Michael E. McConney, Daniela De Biase, Francesca Petronella, Luciando De Sio

The outspread of bacterial pathogens causing severe infections and spreading rapidly, especially among hospitalized patients, is worrying and represents a global public health issue. Current disinfection techniques are becoming insufficient to counteract the spread of these pathogens because they carry multiple...

Multifunctional Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks: Azobenzene-Based Monoacrylate Molecules Impart a Photothermal Effect to Polymer Networks

Minwoo Rim, Dayoung Jung, Dongmin Yu, Hyeyoon Ko, Junhwa Jang, Mintaek Oh, Yu-Jin Choi, Luciano De Sio, Suk-kyun Ahn*, and Kwang-Un Jeong

Stimuli-responsive liquid crystal polymer networks (LCPNs) consisting of azobenzene are mostly studied based on ultraviolet (UV)-induced photochemical isomerization. However, depending on the molecular structure and the degree of UV absorption of azobenzene-based LCPN. In this report, an azobenzene-based monoacrylate...

Label-free and reusable antibody-functionalized gold nanorod arrays for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli cells in a water dispersion

Francesca Petronella - Daniela De Biase - Federica Zaccagnini - Vanessa Verina - Seok-In Lim - Kwang-Un Jeong - Selenia Miglietta - Vincenzo Petrozza - Viviana Scognamiglio - Nicholas P. Godman - Dean R. Evans - Michael McConney and Luciano De Sio

The growing spread of pathogens, caused by anthropogenic activities, pushes the interest of the scientific community towards developing biosensors with improved performance for rapid, simple, and on-site pathogen detection. In this study, we present and discuss a label-free gold nanorod (Au NR) array for the rapid detection...

Remote-controllable and encryptable smart glasses: a photoresponsive azobenzene molecular commander determines the molecular alignments of liquid crystal soldiers

Minwoo Rim, Dong-Gue Kang, Dayoung Jung, Seok-In Lim, Kyung Min Lee, Nicholas P. Godman, Michael E. McConney, Luciano De Sio, Suk-kyun Ahn, Kwang-Un Jeong

For the development of optically encryptable smart glass that can control the molecular alignment of liquid crystals (LCs), an azobenzene-based reactive molecule (ARM) capable of trans–cis photoisomerization is newly designed and synthesized. Photo-triggered LC-commandable smart glasses are successfully constructed by the surface functionalization technique using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTMS) coupling agent and an ARM.
